Just a reminder: The best, most effective response to “Islamophobia” is and has always been excellence.

If a certain employer is not going to give you a job because you’re Muslim, you go work for their competitor’s business and do such great work that you put the first employer out of business. Or just start your own business and do such a great job that you dominate the market and make them sorry they didn’t hire you. Your business will also be a source of revenue and employment for the Muslim community and that will cause a ripple effect.

If a certain school district is not teaching Muslim history in their religion units, the Muslim community’s response should be, fine, let’s start our own schools, schools that will be so effective and groundbreaking that even non-Muslims will want to enroll their children.

If the news networks are filled with anti-Muslim bias, fine, instead of the incessant complaining, Muslims can build their own ventures.

Plenty of other demographically small groups have taken this approach and are enjoying its fruits. Muslims need to get into that mentality because, if the Trump campaign has taught us anything, it is that a sizable portion of the Western population rabidly hate Muslims. We can’t rely on the legal system to bail us out in all or most circumstances because why should it? We have to tap into some dignity and self-worth and himma as Muslims proud first and foremost due to our belief in Allah. We have to rely on Allah and then ourselves if we want lasting change.
