This is what counts as brilliant insight in the secular academic field of Islamic studies:
There is no fact of the matter about what “Islam” is because people disagree about Islam! Ahmad says “Islam is X” but Fatima says “Islam is Y” so who’s to say what Islam is? Therefore, there is no such thing as “Islam”! And if anyone says otherwise, they’re just exercising power in service of their personal interests and larger structures of racism, patriarchy, cis-genderism, etc.
Now give me tenure!
NB: Just to be clear, I’m not saying that everyone in Islamic studies suffers from this kind of muddled thinking.
