Being Zealous Is Not a Bad Thing

The zeal of youth is a beautiful thing. Don’t let others tell you that you are “too religious” or that you’re an “extremist.” Being an extremist means that you look down on the majority of Muslims and their scholars, and that is disastrous for the soul. But dressing “too modestly” or being particular about what you eat and don’t eat, having a big, scraggly beard — don’t let people shame you for your fastidiousness because zeal, fastidiousness, himma are gifts and as soon as you stop appreciating them, Allah takes’em away. And then 10, 20, 30 years later, you wonder with remorse: What happened to that person I used to be?
