Where in the world has the democratic ideal ever been attained? Better yet, why is the democratic ideal so appealing? The idea that every single person having an equal influence on the course of society will lead to utopia or anything positive at all is far-fetched, no? When has mass decision-making ever been productive or conducive to justice? And aren’t the masses susceptible to manipulation? If so, isn’t true power in the hands of the manipulators, not the masses? If a select group of such manipulators wield a disproportionate amount of power, what distinguishes this state of affairs from any other authoritarian regime? In fact, wouldn’t it be in the interests of the manipulators to mask their power behind a facade of democracy?
