Do we as Muslims have a problem with colonization and imperialism? Maybe.
A lot of historical imperialism involved wanton murder and pillaging, i.e., things that go against Islamic ethics. True.
But as an ethnic Persian, I cannot condemn the idea of imperialism in and of itself. Why? Because the Sahaba conquered Persia and brought the light of Islam to that land and civilized (in the true sense of the word) the Persian people.
I thank God everyday for this “colonization” of sorts. This was salvation.
Yet, given this, can I also, without contradiction, speak out against the colonization of the Muslim world at the hands of European powers starting in the nineteenth century? Of course! That colonization was the spread of error and darkness, which any believing, rational person would oppose.
