Don’t Be a News Junkie

“Staying informed” has become a virtue but it should be seen as a vice.

Your attention is a valuable commodity so don’t spend it on things that don’t benefit you.

Closely following the news is a huge drag on your mental and emotional functionality. This is partly because you only have so much emotional capacity for sympathy. So many terrible things are happening to people around the world. One person simply cannot empathize with all that without falling into depression. Or one can fail to empathize and become cold and desensitized. Neither of those outcomes is desirable so the only option is to protect oneself from the bombardment of world news.

The statement of the Prophet ﷺ is important to remember: “Part of the perfection of one’s Islam is his leaving that which does not concern him.”
