If you talk to a drug addict, you might be surprised to hear about their desire to leave this world, to leave their bodies, to leave their selves behind for something greater and transcendent. They know that this dunya is not, cannot be humanity’s final abode. Many of them are searching for the answer, driven by a desire for peace. They realize better than anyone that “this world is a prison” but they use incorrect and destructive means to attempt to escape. There is only one true key to escape and it’s not at the bottom of a bottle or the end of a blunt.

Drug abuse is a major problem in our societies and Muslims are not exempt. There are no simple answers but it should be easy for believers to have compassion for those afflicted with addiction. If nothing else, we can commiserate with each other on the fact that this world is a facade.
