We Need More Muslims in Media, Right?

We have been told for the past 20 years or so that as western Muslims, we need to encourage our youth to get into media, to go into government, to rise the ranks of influential institutions and that’s how our collective condition in our countries will improve. After 1 generation, now we can see some of the result of this as there are more Muslims in these positions today than ever before. And unfortunately it’s not a pretty picture.

The problem is that the way these institutions work is that only self selected people make it to any position of influence. And those who do push back on the status quo are often cut or pressured out or forced into silence. The result is that you have a class of Muslims in these positions of influence who are for all intents and purposes indistinguishable from others. And obviously not every single Muslim in these positions is like that. But I’m speaking about broad trends.

What’s the solution? Well Muslim education, how we are raising children as a community…there’s much work to be done. We can’t keep doing the same things and expect different results.
