I enjoy all the alarmist commentary from establishment media that “Trump winning would spell the end of liberal democracy!” and, “Trump as president would destroy Western democratic civilization!”
As if it wasn’t precisely that liberal democracy that resulted in the possibility of Trump in the first place…
Two logical possibilties:
Either our current electoral predicament is an instance of liberal democracy running smoothly, in which case the implication is that liberal democracies even at their best do not foreclose on the possibility of the likes of Trump taking power and “ending civilization as we know it.”
Or our current electoral predicament is an instance of liberal democracy derailed and subverted, in which case the implication is that liberal democracies are susceptible to derailment and subversion in such a way as to threaten all of civilization and that, as such, a country like the US is, among other things, hypocritical for wagging its finger at other nations (and historical civilizations) for not living up to an unattainable, unrealistic ideal that liberal democracy envisions.
A two-horned dilemma for the ages.
