Memorial Day is a great time to memorialize the millions of lives extinguished by US militarism around the world for the past 60 years. Also a great time to renew our revulsion and disgust with the US armed forces and its people. The US military is like the strongman in a criminal gang, i.e., the enforcer, bullying the world into falling in line according to the commercial and geo-strategic interests of so many corporations and wealthy families. Let’s not lose sight of that.
Those people who choose to join the military in this day and age should know better. The internet exists. There is no reason for anyone — much less someone interested in enlisting — to be misinformed about what the US military and its private military contractors do and to whom they do it. Think about why the suicide rate among veterans is *double* the civilian rate. About 22 veterans kill themselves everyday (some of them kill their own spouses and children too) and it’s not because they feel good about what they have done with their lives and the “positive” difference they’ve made in the world.
Only the most jingoistic, servile simpleton would deny any of this. Unfortunately, there are plenty such people in our midst.
As Martin Luther King described it, the US is “the greatest purveyor of violence in the world.” Malcolm X also said of US military action that “there is no better example of criminal activity.” Things to keep in mind this Memorial Day.
