Who Is the Real “Freethinker”?

Who is the real “free thinker”?

The atheist, who:

1) Lives in a secular world,

2) Goes to schools with secular curricula based on secular philosophies that constantly question and critique faith on the basis of “critical thinking,”

3) Is embedded in an elitist secular culture that neither recognizes God or religion,

4) Is everyday exposed to media, movies, and music that ignore or question the existence of God,

5) Resides in an overall secular intellectual milieu where being “religious” is tantamount to naivety and being skeptical of religion is tantamount to enlightenment,

and then, after all that, arrogantly proclaims as if, against all odds, he has made the discovery of the century, “Eureka! There is no God!”?

…………………Or the Muslim, who:

1) Lives in a secular world,

2) Goes to schools with secular curricula based on secular philosophies that constantly question and critique faith on the basis of “critical thinking,”

3) Is embedded in an elitist secular culture that considers Islam retrograde and terroristic,

4) Is everyday exposed to media, movies, and music that ignore or question the existence of God and attack Islam in particular,

5) Resides in an overall secular intellectual milieu where being “religious” is tantamount to naivety, being skeptical of religion is tantamount to enlightenment, and being Muslim is tantamount to simple-mindedness at best, medieval barbarity, at worst,

and then, after all that, maintains conviction and confidence in his Islamic beliefs and holds firm despite the all consuming pressure, like clutching a burning ember?

Who has really gone against the tide and sought after the truth in the face of overwhelming adversity?

Who is the real "free thinker"? The atheist, who: 1) Lives in a secular world, 2) Goes to schools with secular…

  1. By your logic anyone who rebels against the status quo for a given society is a free thinker. If the Conservative Muslim in Hollywood, CA is the freethinker, then so is the Atheist in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.
You are a Muslim, I assume (correct me if I am wrong) you do not believe any other religion to be true, do you think that makes you closed minded and not a free-thinker?

The whole concept of “free-thinker” is stupid to me. I far more value applying the same logic and reasoning to every topic you consider, being consistent in the application of your beliefs, rather than whether someone is simply adopting ideas contrary to society at large. Even if I disagree with someones thought process I can respect that they apply it equally.

I am an Atheist, it wasn’t always so, until I asked myself why I believed in a God. I didn’t believe there was sufficient evidence Big foot was real or that Aliens had visited earth…so why did I believe something that frankly is supported by an equally sparse body of evidence? Let me clarify that I am not asserting any of those things to be false, I simply don’t accept them as true based on the current body of evidence, I absolutely accept I could be wrong.

    • Free thinking is a stupid concept. It’s a bad meme. So is the concept of open-mindedness, for the same reasons that you pointed out. In Saudi Arabia, there are individuals who will tell you straight up that fornication is moral because let’s be open minded–we could be wrong; who knows? By the same token, in an inverse society, one can say fornication could be immoral because let’s be open minded–we could be wrong; who knows?

      • Correction:

By the same token, in an inverse society, one can say fornication IS immoral*

The point being, there is no logic behind it. It’s just let’s experiment and forget about it all together because why not? Everyone’s doing it and it seems like the world has come to a conclusion whether we know how it arrived there or if that conclusion is even real.
