Right wing Americans support the #MuslimBan because they are under the mistaken impression that it doesn’t affect them.
But it does and it will majorly affect them because, once the public has bought into the idea that the President has the mandate to enact severe, far-reaching, illegal, unconstitutional policies to address a purported “terror threat,” then it is only a matter of time.
Why? Think about it logically. Tomorrow Trump will claim that restricting travel from those 7 Muslim countries is not enough. The terrorists could get in from any of the other Muslim countries not on the banned list. So he’ll sign some more executive orders.
And then he’ll argue that the baddies could be nationals of non-Muslim countries, like Canada, the UK, France, Germany, etc. So he’ll sign some more executive orders, and these will have more of a chance of affecting you, the white American Trump fan.
Shortly thereafter, he’ll point out that “bad dudes” could have been radicalized right here, in the US of A. So he’ll sign some more executive orders about surveillance and the powers of the NSA, police, the FBI, DHS, etc., to spy on, investigate, detain, freeze assets, arrest, prosecute the average American, including you, the white American Trump fan.
Then your tune on executive orders might change.
So even if you hate Muslims with the fire of a thousand burning suns, you should oppose Trump’s ban for your own sake and the sake of your white Christian friends and family. It’s only a matter of time before the party comes to you.
Note: Trump didn’t invent this game plan. Bush and Obama got plenty of mileage on stoking the public’s fear in order to expand their executive powers. And all that power went to Trump who is trying to expand it even more. Muslims are just the first one’s affected.
