The standard academic argument: Europe was an open market of ideas and coupled with intra-European competitive drive and old fashioned ingenuity, this led to innovation that enriched Europe beyond its wildest dreams.

Simpler explanation: Europe conquered the Americas and used genocide and chattel slavery to steal two continents worth of resources, labor, and wealth. This gave it a significant and unprecedented material advantage over all other civilizations. The extreme surplus of wealth is what drove science, art, and technology, not the other way around.
