The one who cares for an orphan and myself will be together in Paradise like this, and the Prophet ? joined his index finger with his middle finger. (Bukhari)
This is a lost sunnah in the Muslim community today. For those living in the West whom Allah has blessed with means, adopting/sponsoring an orphan should be high on your list of life goals. Typical major life goals for many of us include: 1. Get education 2. Establish yourself career-wise 3. Get married 4. Buy house/car 5. Have kids
Let’s just add another to the list: 6. Adopt/sponsor an orphan
Given that our own beloved Messenger ﷺ was an orphan, why are Muslims today being outdone by other communities in this? Why has this sunnah become taboo in some of our cultures? Yes, there are some important fiqh considerations, but there is no reason why we can’t all make the intention to adopt. Even if you are not in the position to do so today, make a sincere intention to care for at least one orphan with the best of provisions and love and sponsor him/her and be responsible for his/her upbringing at some point in your life. We cannot afford to be second-rate on this. And I advise myself first and foremost.
