Looks like liberals are doing their own version of takfir on Reza Aslan…
When I first wrote the above sentence, I wrote it kind of tongue in cheek. But then I thought about it a little more and the comparison is perfectly apt. So much of liberal discourse concerns itself with calling out people (and institutions) on their alleged racism, sexism, and privilege. Sometimes these assessments are correct, other times not so much.
But the purpose is all the same: to shame people, silence them, and signal to others that these people are not on the straight path.
When it comes to matters of theology, belief, blaspheming God, etc., takfir (as done by proper Islamic authorities) is an ugly thing we are told. It is exclusionary and tribalistic and therefore illegitimate.
But calling out people left and right on racism — that is exclusionary too, obviously. It concerns separating the good tribe of racially sensitive, appropriately liberal people from the bad tribe of bigots. So it is both exclusionary and tribalistic in a sense, but that is seen as perfectly necessary and legitimate.
And, to a certain extent, it *is* legitimate. But so is takfir (as done by proper Islamic authorities, not any Joe Blow Muslim with a social media account).
