I am glad Ahmed (the “Clock Kid”) is filing suit against the school and the police that mistreated him, and I hope he wins. The actions of the school and the police department were grossly irresponsible and racist. In the aftermath, the boy was vilified by right-wing media outlets, essentially putting a target on his back, and he is going to have that hanging over his head for the rest of his life.
I am not surprised that his family decided to move to Qatar given how much negative attention he was given from the police, the school, the mayor, the right-wing nationally, including presidential candidates, and many of the residents of his city, some of whom even protested with guns outside the local masjid in his city. Who could live in that kind of environment, when even the public servants that are charged with protecting and serving you show outright animosity and treat you like a “terrorist in training”? Frankly, they drove him out and it is courageous for Ahmed and his family to stand up to that bullying for all the other kids, Muslim or not, who get treated like criminals by these bigoted school officials, public servants, and the police.
Sure, legal action is not going to make bigots see the light, but if it does make them think twice before putting an innocent 14 year old in handcuffs, then that makes it all justified.
