Who Are Liberals Exactly?

Clarification on Liberalism

When I criticize liberalism, my target isn’t the political left.

Liberalism can mean one of two things: 1) political liberalism in the sense of liberal vs. conservative, or 2) philosophical liberalism.

To put it as simply as possible, philosophical liberalism is the idea that the only true, universal moral good is the pursuit and achievement of liberty and the only true, universal moral evil is the deprivation of liberty.

Philosophical liberalism encompasses both political liberals and political conservatives. Republicans are philosophical liberals just as much as Democrats are. The “Alt-Right” is just as philosophically liberal as the left. Donald Trump, George Bush, Francois Hollande, Theresa May, et al., are all liberal, philosophically speaking.

The political left and right simply disagree on what is the best path to maximizing liberty. They do not disagree that maximizing liberty is the goal of just governance, which is what makes them all liberals in the philosophical sense.

Technically speaking, communism, socialism, and even fascism are all liberal programs. They all reduce normativity to the pursuit of liberty. They only disagree on how to achieve true liberty.

As far as Muslims are concerned, philosophical liberalism is the force that has fundamentally transformed the Muslim mind and secularized the Muslim world (and the world at large). Philosophical liberalism is what has disenchanted the Muslim from Islam and ushered in an age of apostasy and religious dissatisfaction we have never before seen in world history. Philosophical liberalism isn’t some insignificant, arcane, academic topic only relevant in the university classroom. It is THE central dogma of our day, impacting EVERYONE in all kinds of spiritually, morally, socially, and intellectually deleterious ways.

What is our response?
