Men Wearing Nail Polish?! Dissolving Gender Roles and Islam

Anyone else as disturbed as I am at seeing men wear nail polish?

The kids and I met up with some friends for a play date at a children’s play space. As soon as we walked into the place, the person at the front who asks you to sign in and pay was a man wearing nail polish. He was not wearing any other feminine clothing or accessories–he was wearing a black shirt with the store logo on it and had a regular man’s haircut and general appearance. But on his fingernails was charcoal gray nail polish.

Neither I nor the kids had ever seen this before. I hoped the kids wouldn’t notice and quickly ushered them to where their friends were.

I had heard a while ago that it’s becoming a trend of sorts these days. It starts, as these things usually do, with celebrities and then trickles down to the masses. Some male celebrities and Hollywood stars were photographed wearing nail polish, and apparently on some college campuses, this has appeared more and more.

Men who don’t identify as gay or trans wear nail polish. Men whose hair isn’t long or dyed or a feminine wig. Men who wear regular men’s clothing and shoes, and who don’t wear makeup.

But they’re starting to paint their nails.

This is just one small but apt example of the way in which the western secular feminist modernity androgenizes men and women. Women imitate men in dress, haircuts, posture, and aspirations in life. Men imitate women in dress, jewelry, and adornments down to makeup and nail polish.

Men are becoming more feminized and women are becoming more masculinized.

As Muslims living in these hectic times of widespread confusion, it’s important for us to ground ourselves in Islam and prophetic wisdom.

Abu Hurayrah narrated, “The Messenger of Allah صلى الله عليه وسلم has cursed the man who wears what women wear and the woman who wears what men wear.” [Abu Dawud]
