Popular culture is ever-devolving. Fahisha (الفاحشة) is rapidly spreading at a stunning pace, to the point where words have lost all meaning.
Have you heard of the “Gay Burger”?
Well, it’s a new fast-food company that just launched a couple of months ago, delivering burgers wrapped in rainbow-colored paper to the door of customers.
The virtual restaurant brand features menu items like Love Me Daddy (a “studly beef daddy patty” topped with American cheese, pickles, white onion, lettuce, and special house sauce “gayoli”), No More Milk Daddy (“vegan daddy patty,” sliced tomato, onion, pickles, lettuce), and I Like Chicks (fried chicken “daddy patty,” gayoli, mustard, lettuce, pickles).
Demand for the burgers has been astronomically high since Tuesday, February 9, when they were released. Customers order from ghost kitchens in Los Angeles, New York City, and San Fransisco, and major food-delivery companies like DoorDash, Postmates, and GrubHub deliver this Gay Burger.
Elijah Daniel, YouTube influencer and founder of Gay Burger, is donating all proceeds to the Los Angeles LGBT Center.
As Muslims, we understand that the nearing of the Hour is associated with an increase in indecency and fahisha in society at large.
وعن أبي هريرة رضي الله عنه قال: قال رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم: سيأتي على الناس سنوات خداعات الحديث وفيه وتشيع الفاحشة.. رواه الحاكم.
Abu Hurayrah narrated that the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم said, “There will come upon the people years of mass deception…(and he mentioned the hadith), and in it, fahisha will become widespread.” [Hakim]
When fahisha has reached out and dug its tentacles into even popular food items like hamburgers, it has definitely become widespread.
Muslim parents, especially, be vigilant about protecting your young children from these influences and talk honestly with your older children about the harms and dangers of these popular forms of fahisha. Pretending these things don’t exist won’t work, because your kids will see them anyway and will not have a solid understanding to ground them Islamically.
May Allah grant us safety, along with our children and families, and protect us, ameen.
