Parenting is one of the most important responsibilities a Muslim can shoulder. Yet, such ‘responsibility’ is nowhere to be found in the book of modernity.
What happens when you take the continuous neglect of parents toward their children to the extreme?
A 15-year-old has been taken into custody after opening fire at a high school outside Detroit, according to the local sheriff’s office. The teen, later identified as Ethan Crumbley, reportedly fired between 15 and 20 shots at Oxford High School in Oxford Township on the afternoon of November 30, killing four students and injuring eight other people.
How does a young 15-year-old, a kid by modern standards, get to the point of not just bringing a lethal weapon to his school, but also murdering people with it?
The following can be found on Al-Jazeera:
On the morning of the shooting, a teacher discovered drawings by Ethan Crumbley that depicted a handgun, a bullet and a bleeding figure next to the words, “Blood everywhere,” “My life is useless,” and “The thoughts won’t stop – help me.”
These phrases indicate a very darkly-clouded and deeply-disturbed mind. In this bright dawn of modernity, what could have led this youngster to such thoughts? And what were his parents doing? Were they aware of the mental sickness eating away at their child?
The father had bought his son the very gun he carried out the shooting with, just four days prior to the event. Both the parents had been called to a meeting where it was recommended that the boy be sent for counselling. Both ignored the suggestion.
And this same article also reads:
On November 21, a teacher found Ethan Crumbley searching for ammunition on his phone. His mother later texted him, “LOL, I’m not mad at you. You have to learn not to get caught.”
Imagine if a movie were made about a school shooting and the parents were written into the script in this way. The movie would not only get bad reviews, it would be laughed at by the audience for having such an unrealistic depiction of parenthood. Surely, even the most awful parents are capable of some level of awareness, right?
Reality is stranger than fiction, as it turns out.
When your life is dictated by the tenets of Secular Liberalism and individuality, you are your own top priority. Your well-being comes before anything else, even at the cost of basic human altruism, to the point where a mother is so far lost in her own whims and desires, she fails to elicit even the slightest concern when her boy presents such obvious signs of psychosis.
Not only did these parents fail to carry out even the very basic duties towards their son, they also fled when asked to be held accountable for this neglect:
Sheriff Bouchard cast doubt on these claims, given the circumstances in which they were discovered.
He added that one of the suspects was seen by a witness smoking outside and “pretty much ran away”.
I am in no way trying to defend the shooter or dismiss his criminality. But it is important to look at the root cause here, and when it comes to school shootings, the problem almost always starts at home.
The education system, too, is to blame. Instead of using teachers as instruments of transferring knowledge (except for when it comes to promoting liberal ideologies like feminism and LGBT), they promote a system of so-called “student-centered learning.”
And when neither the parents nor the teachers form a connection with kids and they are instead left to their own devices to ‘discover’ knowledge on their own, they find convenient replacements for their guidance.
For example, the internet and social media. The internet is a window into the world. All sorts of twisted ideas and morbid content make their way into a young innocent mind. It is here that these teens find websites and forums where their uneducated brains absorb sick anti-human ideologies.
In these times, we need to follow these words of our beloved Prophet ﷺ more than ever before:
Narrated `Abdullah bin `Umar:
Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) said, “Surely! Everyone of you is a guardian and is responsible for his charges: The Imam (ruler) of the people is a guardian and is responsible for his subjects; a man is the guardian of his family (household) and is responsible for his subjects; a woman is the guardian of her husband’s home and of his children and is responsible for them; and the slave of a man is a guardian of his master’s property and is responsible for it. Surely, everyone of you is a guardian and responsible for his charges.” (Sahih al-Bukhari:7138)
