Monday the 26th of September suddenly saw both Nord Stream 1 and 2 lose pressure. Nord Stream is a pair of offshore natural gas pipelines that run under det Baltic Sea from Russia to Germany. President of the EU, Ursula von der Leyen, called the incidents “sabotage” and warned of the “strongest possible response”. Earlier, Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen, described the three separate leaks as “deliberate acts,” adding: “It’s hard to imagine that it’s accidental”. Swedish seismologist registered multiple explosions, and what was first unclear, is now being treated as deliberate sabotage.
So, who is most likely to be behind this attack? Who has most to gain and everything to lose?
US secretary of state Antony Blinken saw the Nord Stream attacks as a “significant opportunity” to finally end the dependence of Europe on Russian energy. Former Polish Defense Minister and now member of the European Parliament, Radoslaw Sikorski, who is well connected to Washington elites through his employment at various think tanks, attributed the attacks to the United States writing: “Thank you, USA,” on his Twitter profile.
There has been no shortage of threats from some Western nations against the collaboration between Russia and Germany to build the Nord Stream pipeline both before and after February when Russia sent troops into Ukraine. The pipeline has been ready since September last year, but pressure was put on Germany to back out of the deal. Polish President Andrzej Duda demanded just last month that the pipeline be “totally scrapped.”
For Poland the pipeline meant a loss of revenue because it bypassed the Yamal-Europe land pipeline that goes through Belarus and Poland. If Nord Stream becomes “totally scrapped” that will put Poland – and in extension Europe and the US – in a strong negotiating position with Russia, and in the words of Sikorski, President Vladimir Putin “will have to talk to countries controlling” the alternative routes.
Could the United States be behind the attack? Well, according to Joe Biden, the US would have no problem with preventing the Nord Stream 2 from becoming operational if Russia were to invade Ukraine. In fact, he underlined that no matter what, the US would be able to “bring an end to it:”
“If Russia invades…then there will be no longer a Nord Stream 2. We will bring an end to it.”
Reporter: “But how will you do that, exactly, since…the project is in Germany’s control?”
Biden: “I promise you, we will be able to do that.”
And let us not forget when Victoria Nuuland – Under Secretary of State – said that “If Russia invades Ukraine, one way or another, Nord Stream 2 will not move forward.”
Nord Stream 2 has been in the crosshairs of the US war machine for a long time now because it symbolizes Russia’s tie to Europe. With Nord Stream 2 Russia and Germany would have been able to develop both financial and political relationships bringing the two sides closer together.
This would have been catastrophic for the US who are already losing power and hegemony in Europe. Nord Stream 2 plays an essential part in bringing Europe back into the fold of US control by making them dependent on US gas instead of Russian. Nord Stream 2 was a prestige project for Russia and Germany, and something that they both wanted. Putin has on several occasions reiterated that there is no energy crisis in Europe, and that the EU just needs to ‘push the button’ on the Nord Stream 2 pipeline to get more natural gas.
In conclusion, there is a lot of evidence pointing to the fact that the US has everything to gain from this attack, and that Russia has everything to lose. Therefore, it makes no sense that Russia would be behind these attacks as some European leaders are suggesting.
What are the Geopolitical consequences of this?
In the end, no matter who blew up the Nord Stream pipeline, the result remains the same: Gas and electricity will become more expensive fueling civil unrest and anti-government sentiments amongst Western populations. Populations who are already stretched to their maximum finding it difficult to make ends meet, and who are more distrusting and hateful towards their governments than ever before.
Whoever the US and its mainstream media operatives find “guilty” of these attacks, will be targeted heavily by sanctions and possibly military actions resulting in larger scale war. It may not materialize into actual combat between NATO and Russia but can be done by proxy via Ukraine (as it already is), cyberattacks, financial encroachment and “cold war” like tactics. However, there is nothing ruling out an upscaling in actual militarily mobilization resulting in possible war.
Finally, the Nord Stream attacks can be used to further ‘push’ the agenda of transitioning to “renewable” energies and “energy rationing” where we will most definitely experience moments of blackouts and a very ‘dark winter’ as Biden phrased it last year. The transition from fossil fuels to “renewable” energy will further entrap humanity into a dystopian nightmare with more control, more security, more surveillance, and less freedom.
