The Liberal Justification for Abortion and Suicide Is Inconsistent

Back when I was in college, I took a Philosophy class on “Contemporary Moral Issues.” Being a liberal institution, it naturally followed that they would try to instill liberal ideals within us. This included a range of things including veganism and abortion.

Interestingly, the professor quoted David Hume — one the most influential Western philosophers from the 19th century — when arguing in support of abortion rights. Essentially, he expanded on David Hume’s ideals in order to emphasize that babies should be aborted if they turn out to be a burden. He actually went as far as saying it is irrelevant whether or not the fetus has life.

After having submitted my final paper (to ensure I get a good grade and pass the class), I decided to have a short conversation with my professor. During our talk, I brought up David Hume and replaced the example of abortion with suicide. Essentially, I argued using the very same arguments of “my body, my choice” and “kill yourself if it’s a burden.” The professor was clearly uncomfortable and broke his own staunch liberal principles to say:

“The person SHOULD try to live.”

The secular paradigm is seldom principled.

Then there’s also the fact that the professor hid some background information regarding David Hume from us. Hume was in fact himself a staunch Nihilist.

He wrote that we humans are born in chains; we cannot choose our parents, wealth, or environment at birth; we essentially have no control over anything; everything is pre-destined.

He did however say that there is one thing which we can control, and this is the choice we have of whether to live or die. Thus he further advocated that if a person finds life to be a burden (which is something he strongly emphasized throughout his essay), he should simply go ahead and kill himself.

Ever wondered why the modern world is practically a gigantic mental asylum with continuously rising depression and suicide rates?

Are you saying we can we cannot choose our parents, wealth, or environment at birth? The rest of your essay is just as accurate.
