Over the past few decades, Islam has spread all over the world, like an unstoppable force. This spread is often perceived as intimidating to the native people who confusedly think Islam disrupts their culture and causes an increase in crime within their country.
It is a fact that Islam has never been as diffused so vastly in the World as it is these days, and it is also a fact that Muslims have never been as many in number as we are today. Likewise, no one can deny that most traditions and cultures are facing the grave threat of extinction in our current world, where a language dies every 14 days.
Can really we conclude that Islam is the reason behind the end of traditional society then?
As ridiculous as it may sound, this link is often made in the West, where many fear a great replacement. This anxiety is echoed verbatim within the political sphere, where the theme of migration and national safety is increasingly garnering more and more voters.
The reasoning behind this idea lies with the following two main arguments:
- Western traditions are disappearing in countries wherein there is an significant Muslim diaspora.
- Muslim immigrants commit the most crimes in the West.
It’s important to note here that some nationalists may not make any mention of Islam in their arguments. The most intelligent among the Nationalist parties are aware that Islam is a conservative religion which shares many values with their own tradition. They usually accuse immigration or race of being at fault instead. In a nutshell, they believe that immigration caused the demise of their cultures and that some races are more prone to committing acts of violence than others.
The Great Replacement: The End of Western Civilization
Imagine being born in the seventies and having grown up in Birmingham, UK. Imagine you left the city during your early adulthood and returned today, to your old neighborhood, only to find that it no longer exists as you remember it. Your favorite bakery is now a desi restaurant, and the local church has been converted into a mosque. Most people would probably be sad if they learnt that a place they cherished is no more. And no one should be castigated for feeling this way, especially given that it’s just a natural human reaction.
Of course, I recognize that Muslim populations settling in Western societies has had many positive outcomes (it helped Islam to spread within these lands), but I can still empathize with these natives who have witnessed a drastic change in their country following immigration.
That being said, for some reason, they fail to see how Muslim immigration is merely another consequence of the Liberal World Order, which was already ravaging their culture. If this wasn’t the case, then how would they explain how tradition is disappearing even in countries like Morocco, where there is less than a 1% non-Moroccan population?
Islam is not at fault, and Muslims have historically been respectful of native traditions everywhere that they have spread to. This respect was, of course, not absolute. They had to adapt to moral considerations, but these cultures could prosper in Muslim lands nonetheless. In many cases, the Muslim population even adopted some of these customs in terms of clothing, architecture (for their mosques), cuisine, etc.
Ironically, Islam sometimes even inspired Westerners to re-embrace their authentic traditional cultures by normalizing cultural elements that had been erased by liberalism long before immigration. Last year, a group of French Catholic women trended on Twitter after deciding to veil their hair like their ancestors did. Let’s be honest, this wouldn’t have happened without the influence of Islam.
White nationalists do not understand that, just like they get upset when they see all the changes around them, their grandparents felt exactly the same when they witnessed the following generations. Traditions started to die in the West when liberalism began to rise. And now, it’s time for them to take a moment to think and choose their battles and opponents wisely.

Does Islam Cause Criminality in the West?
Ultimately, the far-right thinks that Islam leads to increased crime in the West. Some are shy about it, and others are much more brazen in their statements.
You may have heard comments like:
“Immigration causes incivility.”
“It’s Islamism—not Islam—that is a danger to our nation and way of life.”
But we all know that what they really have a problem with is actually Islam.
The nationalist movement did not protest when European countries welcomed in thousands of Ukrainian refugees. Nobody argued in the media that this would lead to a lack of safety and security within the country. The silence can be explained in only of these two ways. Either:
- they are closet racists that believe only non-Whites are violent; or
- they are Islamophobes that believe only Muslim immigration causes problems.
Regarding Islamism, they keep this term ambiguous in order to camouflage their enmity towards Muslims. They often use this term to designate terrorist groups and khawarij, but they also casually sneak in generic orthodox understandings of Islam under the ambit of the word.

For various reasons, whether racial or ideological, the far-right tends to believe that Islam causes societal violence.
Emmanuelle Macron recently spoke of the high concentration of criminal activity carried out by Muslim illegal immigrants in Paris. It is a fact that a significant portion of prisoners are descendants of recent immigrants or are themselves immigrants.
Today, when we look at delinquency for example in Paris, where we have a high concentration (…) of this illegal immigration, yes, it is very present in the facts of delinquency.
(…) In Paris, at least half of the delinquency that we observe comes from people who are foreigners, either in an irregular situation or awaiting permits (…) and who often come from these sectors…
This sad reality is also evident in the prison population, where the descendants of recent immigrants and/or the immigrants themselves constitute a large percentage of the inmates. In 2018, Algerians, Moroccans, Tunisians and Romanians made up 42% of the people in France’s prisons.
The research of sociologist, Steven Fish, in his book, Are Muslims Distinctive?: A Look at the Evidence, debunks the correlation between Islam and social violence, since Muslims actually commit fewer crimes than non-Muslims. Homicide rates are notably lower in Muslim societies, and the proportion of Muslims within a country positively affects its murder rate, with a higher Muslim population having a direct correlation with less homicide.
He mentions:
Homicide is markedly rarer in Muslim societies than in non-Muslim societies. The proportion of the country that is made up of Muslims is a good predictor of the murder rate, with a larger Muslim population associated with less homicide. This relationship holds when we control for other potentially important determinants of homicide.
Predominantly, Muslim countries average 2.4 murders per annum per 100,000 people, compared to 7.5 in non-Muslim countries. The percentage of the society that is made up of Muslims is an extraordinarily good predictor of a country’s murder rate. More authoritarianism in Muslim countries does not account for the difference. I have found that controlling for political regime in statistical analysis does not change the findings. More Muslims, less homicide.
Furthermore, it is important to note that Muslim countries also tend to be much safer, with many indexes ranking them as the safest nations to live in.
So is it that Muslim immigrants seem to disproportionately fill Western prisons because of their criminal actions? It’s a question that is often pondered but not fully understood.
The truth is, the path to immigration for any individual is a complex and nuanced one. Factors such as work opportunities, education and even war all play a role in shaping the experiences and motivations of those who choose to migrate. And it’s important to acknowledge that these varying experiences can lead to different outcomes, including a tendency towards anti-social behavior.
But it’s not just personal experiences that shape the actions of immigrants. The socioeconomic conditions in their home countries play a significant role too. Imagine a person who feels they have no other choice but to risk death and leave their home behind because they believe their current circumstances make life unbearable. Or someone who has lost everything they hold dear due to war. These types of individuals, with their unique mindset and psychology, may statistically be more likely to engage in criminal behavior.

Additionally, the literature of sociology has long established a connection between feelings of anomy and anti-social behavior. So it’s not surprising that those raised in strong, tight-knit communities may struggle to live in highly individualistic societies. On top of that, they may even be viewed as a disturbance and second-class citizens, leading to further discrimination and social alienation.
It is time for those who harbor Islamophobic sentiments to confront the truth:
The chaos that exists on Western soil is not caused by the religion of Islam but rather by flawed geopolitical policies, misguided societal visions and a defective penal system that fails to instill respect for the rule of law.
The disproportionate number of French Moroccans and Algerians in French prisons is a reflection of their overrepresentation in low-income populations. Disadvantaged individuals are more likely to commit crimes since they do not fear the consequences and are willing to take risks. The judiciary system is inadequate as it shuns physical punishment, instead relying on corrective measures and overcrowded, financially burdensome prisons.
Another possibility is that systemic discrimination in the West elevates the risk of incarceration for those of a Muslim background. The media’s representation and the biases it perpetuates have already led to unfair treatment of other marginalized groups, such as men, who often receive much heavier sentences for the exact same offenses as women.

In any case, there are a plethora of explanations for why Muslims are disproportionately represented in Western prisons despite the fact that Islam actually serves as an effective deterrent against criminal behavior. It is time for anti-Islam detractors to own their culpability and stop playing the victim. The problems they face are the product of their own doings and shortcomings, not of Islam.
True change can only be achieved by acknowledging the root causes of an issue.
Anyone who is clear-eyed and objective will quickly recognize that Islam holds the keys to resolving the problems that are plaguing the West.

Not necessarily true. Muslim immigrants in Europe on average are more observant than their countrymen back home. Immigrants typically come from, the most, conservative agrarian parts in their motherland. Anatolia in Turkey, The Rif in Morocco, Mirpur in Pakistan etc. The US had a different type of migration. Mainly attracting the secularized middle classes from the large cities.
