These past few days, social media has been set ablaze by the revelation of the latest scandal to brace the news: the discovery of a mysterious network of illegal tunnels beneath a Jewish synagogue in Brooklyn, New York.
As always seems to be the case with anything related to Jews, it rapidly became a focal point for numerous “conspiracy theories,” some of which were even related to child trafficking and child sacrifice. It is possible that these theories emerged due to the recent release of the Epstein list, just a few days earlier, along with what appeared to be a child-sized mattress stained with blood or faeces.

These unfounded, extravagant, and insane theories were swiftly dismissed in the mainstream media, as we read here, for example:
Vision circulating on social media shows what appears to be stained mattresses being removed from the tunnel, sparking wild speculation and a slew of conspiracy theories.
Some users on TikTok and X, formerly Twitter, claimed the sight of the mattresses was ‘proof’ human trafficking was taking place at the synagogue – a baseless claim Jewish leaders have described as anti-Semitic.
American far-right figure Nick Fuentes described the tunnel as “freaky stuff”.
“I don’t think I’ve ever heard of anybody who’s doing anything good who is digging tunnels under the city,” Mr Fuentes said on his internet video show America First.
“That’s usually the beginning of a very dark story.”

Others online compared the emergence of the tunnel to the vast underground network constructed by Hamas in Gaza.
“Hamas built tunnels to resist tyranny, but this tunnel is purely for evil purposes,” one X post read.
Anti-Defamation League director Johnathan Greenblatt told Rolling Stone magazine the online disinformation was “disturbing”.
“It’s deeply troubling that anyone would use this incident, which the Chabad movement at large has strongly condemned, to draw inappropriate and false comparisons to Hamas tunnels in Gaza,” Mr Greenblatt said.
He also condemned efforts to “propagate age-old anti-Semitic conspiracy theories, such as Jews are involved in human trafficking or organ harvesting”.
Like many others, the author suggests that this was the mere handiwork of an isolated handful of rogue zealous young men who desired to hasten the return of the Rebbe, the former leader of the influential Chabad-Lubavitch movement who is thought by some to still be alive in some sense (you may read an earlier article of ours to understand how he shaped the views of hundreds of thousands of Jews, including Netanyahu and Ben Shapiro, as well as how one the ideas endorsed by him was that of non-Jews supposedly having demonic souls).
But the news of these tunnels also brings to the mind a particular Talmudic passage that could be seen as disturbing to modern sensibilities in ethics.
It’s about a mysterious non-Jew named Antoninus, who has been identified by Jewish scholar Abraham Cohen as being either Marcus Aurelius, the famous Roman emperor-philosopher; or his general, Avidius Cassius, who ended up rebelling against him in order to usurp the imperial title.
Antoninus eventually developed a friendly relationship with rabbi Yehuda HaNasi, also known as Judah ha-Nasi. He is considered to be the chief redactor-editor of the Mishnah (which, alongside the Gemara, forms the core of the Talmud) and thus one of the most influential rabbis in history. Their friendship ended up developing into a sort of spiritual teacher-student relationship, with it even having been said that Antoninus converted to Judaism.

The passage we’ll be taking a look at is one in which Antoninus is ready to commit slaughter so that his “secret” of studying Judaism would not become not unveiled… and it involves a tunnel.
We read in Avodah Zarah 10b4:
The Gemara relates another anecdote involving Antoninus. Antoninus had a certain underground cave from which there was a tunnel that went from his house to the house of Rabbi Yehuda HaNasi. Every day he would bring two servants to serve him. He would kill one at the entrance of the house of Rabbi Yehuda HaNasi, and would kill the other one at the entrance of his house, so that no living person would know that he had visited Rabbi Yehuda HaNasi. He said to Rabbi Yehuda HaNasi: When I come to visit, let no man be found before you.
Rabbis from the school of Tosafot, who flourished in France and Germany during the 12th and 13th centuries, attempted to rationalize these murders as follows:
He would kill one at the entrance of the house of Rabbi: And if you will say (ask): And is not the spilling of blood (murder) one of the seven [universal] commandments? And it is even forbidden to a Jew, for behold it was taught (below, Avodah Zarah 26a), “Idolaters and shepherds of small domesticated animals – we do not raise them [out of a pit], but we don’t lower them [into it].” It can be said (answered) that he was afraid lest they would make the thing known to the ministers and they would cause him to be killed; and we say if someone comes to kill you, arise early to kill him. And it can also be said (answered) that he chose the heretics and the denouncers. For even though there are no [disqualifications on account of being from the] heretics among the [other] nations, concerning the acceptance of sacrifices from them; concerning lowering, there are – as it is challenged in the first chapter of Chullin (13b), “Now if one lowers a Jewish [heretic] into a pit, is it necessary [to say that one lowers a gentile one]?”

This moral philosophy of “if someone comes to kill you, kill him first” has been applied in other places within the Talmud too. For example, in Berakhot 58a, you find the story of the Persian who was about to reveal to the local authorities how Jewish scriptures contain discriminatory statements regarding non-Jews:
As he was leaving, that man said to Rabbi Sheila: Does God perform such miracles for liars? He replied: Scoundrel! Aren’t gentiles called donkeys? As it is written: “Whose flesh is as the flesh of donkeys” (Ezekiel 23:20). Rabbi Sheila saw that he was going to tell the Persian authorities that he called them donkeys. He said: This man has the legal status of a pursuer. He seeks to have me killed. And the Torah said: If one comes to kill you, kill him first. He struck him with the staff and killed him.
Anyway, my intent here is obviously not to endorse all of these obviously false conspiracy theories. Rather, it is merely quite intriguing for us to contemplate over how a reference in the Talmud to some sort of underground tunnel is so closely intertwined with such a controversial and extreme approach to the lives of non-Jews.
In light of all of this, the expression, “there’s light at the end of the tunnel,” takes on a new and particularly lugubrious meaning.

The problem at hand is that when the authorities find out about the tunnels, instead of properly investigating the issue, they were in a rush to shut down the tunnel network by pouring concrete into it. Now certainly such irresponsible yet mysterious behavior will indeed raise eye bows and will lead to generation of conspiracy theories because of it had been Islam or any other religion in question, the issue would have been thoroughly scrutinized and investigated, apprehending the culprits.
