Introduction
The alliance between American conservatives and India’s ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has grown quietly but steadily. To many MAGA-aligned Christians, Prime Minister Narendra Modi is seen as a strong, uncompromising leader who is tough on Islam, pro-Israel, and traditionalist in values. Behind the curated image, however, lies a cold, hard truth: Modi’s BJP is not hostile only towards Muslims—it is also waging a global campaign against Christianity.
While churches are torched and pastors are jailed in India, BJP-affiliated organizations in the U.S. are working just as hard to silence criticism, whitewash persecution, and erase Christian influence in schools and public discourse. They do this while enjoying support from American evangelicals who seem unaware—or unwilling—to confront the facts.
This is not just mere hypocrisy. It is geopolitical manipulation. And it needs to be exposed.
Modi’s Anti-Christian Agenda in India
The BJP’s ideological engine, Hindutva, envisions India as a Hindu-only nation. Non-Hindu communities—including Christians—are portrayed as foreign, disloyal, and dangerous.
In 2023, the Evangelical Fellowship of India documented over 600 incidents of violence against Christians, including assaults, disruptions of worship, and destruction of property.
In Manipur, an ethnic conflict mid-2023 had escalated into targeted violence against Christians. Over 250 churches were destroyed, and more than 60,000 people were displaced. Several reports confirmed that Meitei Christians were forced to reconvert under threat and were made to burn Bibles.
Anti-conversion laws in multiple BJP-ruled states have led to the arrests of hundreds of pastors and lay Christians. Even peaceful baptisms or prayer meetings are now prosecuted under vague accusations of “forced conversions.”
Yet, while India’s Christian population is being viciously suppressed, BJP representatives abroad continue to market the government as being tolerant and inclusive—especially in the United States.

Silencing the Truth in America
In the U.S., BJP-aligned organizations like the Hindu American Foundation (HAF) have built relationships across the political spectrum, while also actively lobbying against any acknowledgment of Christian persecution in India.
When U.S. lawmakers introduced resolutions condemning religious violence in India, HAF and similar groups lobbied Congress to block or heavily suppress those efforts.
These groups label any critique of India’s human rights record as “Hinduphobia,” a term employed strategically to deflect attention away from attacks on both Christians and Muslims.
This strategy doesn’t just hide the truth; it protects the BJP’s international image, and it allows the persecution to continue with little to no consequence whatsoever.
Erasing Christianity from American Classrooms
In California and other U.S. states, Hindu nationalist groups have fought aggressively for school textbooks to be rewritten, removing references to caste discrimination, missionary efforts, and Christian influence in South Asian history.
Back in 2006 and then again in 2016, coalitions linked to BJP-aligned diaspora groups sought to replace terms like “Dalit” and erase any mention of Christian missionaries altogether, labeling such things as offensive or “colonial.”
Professors that are critical of Modi’s policies or Hindutva ideology have been targeted with online harassment, lawsuits, and coordinated pressure campaigns, often led by legal teams associated with diaspora Hindu groups.
The goal is very clear: remove any and all Christian legacy from the narrative, redefine Hindu nationalism as apolitical culture, and brutally clamp down on and censor voices that dare to challenge the BJP’s history and present-day actions.

MAGA’s Blind Spot
Despite the BJP’s colorful track record, large parts of the American political right, especially MAGA-aligned conservatives, continue to support Modi. The reason for this? Well, he’s anti-China, aligns with Israel, and “fights radical Islam.” But these supporters ignore the reality:
- In Manipur, hundreds of churches were destroyed and pastors were assaulted while the BJP’s central government remained completely silent.
- BJP-allied groups have never condemned attacks against Christians, and they routinely push bills and policies that suppress religious minorities both in India and abroad.
- In the U.S., these groups present themselves as “defenders of faith,” while simultaneously erasing Christian voices from schoolbooks and academic discourse.
It’s a major contradiction. And it’s being exploited.
Conclusion
The BJP is most certainly not a friend to Christianity. Its policies in India have led to the imprisonment of pastors, the destruction of churches, and the suppression of Christian life. Its affiliates in the U.S. have worked to drown out and silence awareness, manipulate political narratives, and erase Christian history and presence from public discourse.
Despite this, many American conservatives continue to embrace the Modi regime without scrutiny. But the truth is catching up.
For Christians who care at all about their faith; and for anyone who values religious freedom, the facts speak loud and clear: the BJP’s global agenda is not only a threat to Muslims but Christians too.
